First-Year
Japanese (JPN101, JPN102, JPN103: Elementary Japanese I, II
III)
First-year Japanese
introduces the basic structure of Japanese language. JPN101
is for students who have little or no prior experience of Japanese.
Throughout the year, classroom instruction emphasizes on oral
communication skills through aural-oral practices. Students
also learn Hiragana syllabary in the beginning of JPN101, which
will help their authentic language learning experience. Later,
Katakana syllabary and Kanji (Chinese characters) are gradually
introduced.
Second-Year
Japanese (JPN201, JPN202, JPN203: Intermediate Japanese I, II,
III)
Second-year Japanese
sequence completes the introduction of basic Japanese grammar.
Development of oral proficiency is continued to be focused,
with accelerated introduction of vocabulary and kanji. Since
many students study abroad in Japan after the second-year courses,
achieving communication skills necessary to live and study in
Japan is a primary objective.
Third-year
and Fourth-year Japanese
The upper level
Japanese classes focus on reading and writing skills in Japanese.
Aural-oral skills are further developed in discussions and presentations
with the topic covered in the reading and writing materials.
JPN
251 / JPN 351: Review Grammar and Composition I / II
JPN 251 emphasizes
the development of writing skills. Students review basic grammar
and learn new sentence patterns and idioms as they practice
writing. In class presentations help them improve their oral
proficiency. JPN 351 aims to further the fluency in oral and
written Japanese through grammar review, kanji study, and writing
compositions.

310 / JPN 410: Intensive Reading in Japanese I / II
JPN 310 and JPN
410 focus on reading practices. Instruction of reading strategies
and practices of rapid and close/analytical reading are incorporated.
Both authentic materials and texts tailored for learners of
Japanese are used. In class discussions and presentations on
a variety of topics used in the reading provide opportunities
for aural-oral practices.

390: Topics
This repeatable
course is a topic-based course. Topics may include business
Japanese, Japanese history, Japanese literature, and Japanese
linguistics.

297 / JPN 397 / JPN 497: Internship (0.00 - 9.00 credit
hours)
Internship
opportunities are usually available to the students who
study aboard in Japan both fall and winter terms. Past
students did an internship for two to four weeks at a
bank, a city hall and private companies and offices. In
addition to the on-site experience, students are required
to write a paper in Japanese.

299 / JPN 399 / JPN 499: Independent Study (1.00 - 9.00
credit hours)
Independent
Study intends to provide an opportunity for a student
to study an area that is not offered as a regular course
at NCC, or to allow a student to study a highly specialized
area toward which he or she has developed a curiosity.
A student or a group of students may initiate and design
the Study with the approval of a supervising faculty and
the Associate Academic Dean.
